A leader opened a gathering by praying, “Lord, thanks for today. It is the beginning of a new day we have never seen before.” Although the idea seems obvious, that prayer can help us think about our days a little differently. Imagine praying this the day before you learned that school was canceled for the foreseeable future because of a global health crisis. Imagine praying this on that day. And on the day after. And weeks after that.

Because each day is a new opportunity, it will be filled with some things we can anticipate and prepare for as well as some things we can’t. So in both cases it’s important that we recognize our limitations and lean heavily on God—actively choosing to follow His direction in whatever comes and relying on His strength.

This prayer also reminds us that the newness of each day is a gift worth celebrating. Perhaps this concept was what prompted the psalmist to say, “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24 NKJV).

Today may hold joys or difficulties, probably both. Even so, the treasure of each brand-new day is so special that Moses was led to write, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).
